No car? No worries!
10 places to visit around the Melbourne CBD
Melbourne, Australia, is one of the beautiful, vibrant and friendly cities in the world to visit.
Each year, we welcome hundreds of students to Trinity College Pathways School to commence their Foundation Studies program.
But it’s not all lectures, tutorials and studying! Students will have plenty of time to explore the beautiful city of Melbourne.
We’ve chosen our favourite 10 places to visit around the Melbourne CBD – no car needed!
1
Melbourne Zoo
Koalas, kangaroos, emus, echidnas, oh my!
Melbourne Zoo is located just a 20-minute tram ride from the CBD (or a 20 minute *walk* from Trinity College!).
Set amongst leafy Royal Park, you’ll forget that the CBD is just 4km away. You’ll get to see some of Australia’s, and the world’s, most beautiful animals.
2
Queen Victoria Market
Set in the heart of the CBD, Queen Vic’ Markets (as the locals call it) is a must-visit destination for any food-loving traveller.
Roam the ‘sheds’ out back, past all the fresh produce, then wander inside the hall itself for some exquisite cheeses, pastries and deli produce.
3
The Block Arcade
Located in the very heart of the Melbourne CBD on Bourke Street, when you enter this arcade, you feel like you’ve travelled back to the early 1900s.
Host to multiple boutique shops and cafes, lovers of architecture will get a real kick out of this place.
4
The NGV
Melbourne’s most significant gallery,
the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) hosts some pretty spectacular exhibitions, and often hosts some fun after-hours events with live music, food trucks and entertainment.
5
Royal Botanical Gardens
Up the road from the NGV, the Royal Botanical Gardens is a Melbourne CBD oasis!
With themed gardens, a lake, plenty of bird life, and great views of the city, a stroll around the Botanical Gardens is good for the soul.
6
The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)
AFL, ‘Aussie Rules’ or, most commonly referred to simply as ‘Footy’, is almost a religion in Victoria! The AFL season runs from March to October-ish each year.
It’s a *big* deal in Melbourne.
Even if you don’t support a team – rocking up, being part of the crowd, getting a meat pie – it’s quite the experience!
7
Luna Park
A big toothy grin greets you as you step foot off the tram at Luna Park in St Kilda.
Set next to the beach, Luna Park has the oldest operating roller coaster in the Southern Hemisphere.
St Kilda itself is one of Melbourne’s most famous seaside suburbs. It’s also famous for its cakes! Cake by the ocean, anyone?
8
Melbourne Museum
Want to know more about the history of Melbourne?
Melbourne Museum is a massive museum in the heart of inner-city suburb, Carlton, and has a wide and diverse array of exhibitions, covering things like Indigenous history and early 20th century life in Melbourne.
9
SEA LIFE Melbourne
Ever wanted to see penguins? You can! SEA LIFE Melbourne has all kinds of sea creatures great and small, including King Penguins!
10
FOOD!
Ok, food isn’t exactly a 'destination', but thanks to our wonderfully multicultural community, Melbourne is blessed with some of the best and most diverse cuisine in the world.
You could easily spend an entire day on a foodie expedition around the city!
Head to Carlton for amazing Italian, Little Bourke Street in the CBD for yummy dumplings, Richmond or Footscray for proper Vietnamese, Fitzroy for the best vegan delights, or St Kilda for the aforementioned cake!
Melbourne also has a very proud coffee culture. Not as many people go to chains like Starbucks here – coffee lovers instead line up at the little cafes that are dotted everywhere across the city.
So there you have it – you don't need to have a car to experience the best of Melbourne! These 10 places to visit around the Melbourne CBD are not the complete list – there are so many fun places to discover in our beautiful city.
