Our Memories
Many people say Trinity College is where some of their fondest memories were made. Here's a series of recollections drawn from the memory bank of our students and alumni.
I loved my Behan room in third year, and I thought my curtains from home made it even more beautiful. Anni Grimwade (TC 1981)

My best friends and I before our valedictory dinner. This was the first normal event after two years of COVID-19, and also unfortunately one of our last events during our time at Trinity. We were all very excited! Celia Purvis (TC 2019)

This photo was taken at our final sit down dinner in third year. Sit down dinners were such a highlight for me during my time at Trinity. Whether it was formal hall or V-dinner, we always got up to some sort of mischief. Harry Croser (TC 2019).

Great memories of college – including everyone supporting and encouraging each other no matter what. Here’s the girls when we won the athletics premiership in 2001. I love how young and happy we are here – ready to conquer the world. Meg Adem, née Mulcahy (TC 1999)

My fondest memory is singing the College song at the close of O-Week. This is always such a special moment shared between both freshers and returning students, creating a bond that has been proven to last a lifetime. Lachie Gall (TC 2019)

It was a very surprising day for me given I had already had a couple of years at Uni and joined Trinity to participate in a number of activities designed for first years. Not quite sure how we managed to win except maybe for avoiding too much attention. I remember the stories of prior year events with helicopters, rope courses through the trees and some of the most disgusting liquids you could imagine. Simon Phillips (TC 1993)

It was Commencement week. Suitably disguised, by courtesy of the J.C. Williamson wardrobe, we were off to the Block, Collins Street, for merry japes. The Bull was activated by [Harold] Oddie (anterior half, but I have forgotten who was arse-end Charlie). The group therefore was distinguished by a rudimentary Juttoddie component. Rod Andrews (TC 1930)

Another memory I have is when Trinity won the football flag for the first time since 1967 when we won it in 1994. The legendary Frank Henagan was coach. The following week we held a black tie dinner to celebrate and invited the team of 1967 to come back and share it with us to celebrate the two flags. I remember my father Tom Hasker (who said he was the "runner" for the team in 1967) was very glad to receive an invitation to attend and couldn't believe how much the college had come on since the Trinity days of "men only" back then. Ben Hasker (TC 1990)

All those cold mornings of training were worth it in the end when we won the women’s rowing in 1981. Anni Grimwade (TC 1981)

Still one of the best of my College memories was the second day of O-Week in my fresher year. We - an unknowing and apprehensive bunch of freshers - woke up to blaring music, shouts down the corridors and banging on our doors, bleary-eyed and fearful, we made our way quickly down to the Bul where there was a massive linen-clothed table, set up with pastries, fruit and champagne, which the black-suited TCAC served us ... Welcome to Trinity! How Epic! Tim Hamilton (TC 2008)

I was very proud indeed to have inherited [the Senior Student's suit] from my predecessors. I took it home and my mother took it to the drycleaners. My mother says that they told her “Madam, the only thing holding this suit together is the dirt: we suggest you don’t clean it.” And she didn’t. Chris Roper (TC 1972)

This particular Juttoddie - I think this was the only one I participated in. Jennifer Muntz, who was later Jennifer Smithers, was dressed up as a very formidable Principal of Janet Clarke Hall called Miss Joske. Jennifer was Senior Student, Ian Donaldson was Senior Student of Trinity, and in this particular photo he is dressed as the former Principal, Dr Behan. The three of us standing around Ian Donaldson are me, Barbara Watson - who was a medical student from Perth - and Jan Abson, and we are, what you could call, ladies of ill-repute. ... I remember what I had on, it was a red skirt that I'd made and I was wearing it as a dress. Rosalind Smallwood (JCH 1953)

Janet and I were 'red freshers' in 1993, ie we were older than the average fresher. I was a non-resident in 1990 ... but I entered college as a resident, after a few years out, in 1993. Janet and I did not win Juttodie in 1993 but what was very special is that a helicopter landed on the bulpadock and whisked Janet and me away mid-way through the race, landing on a helipad on the yarra and then flying over the city and returning us to the bulpadock an hour later. I'll never forget it. It was organised and funded by an old Trinitarian from the 60s who had something similar happen to him back then. Ben Hasker (TC 1990)

We did do a re-enactment of the laying of the foundation stone with Cam Forbes and Robin Sharwood playing certain roles. I was Bishop Moorhouse's wife and wore a vintage white muslin Victorian dress that is now in the collection of the NGV. Lara Nicholls (TC 1986)

I didn't want to go to Trinity when my father, a medicine non-resident, suggested it. No, I said to myself (but not to him), I won't know anyone, I'm too scared. But by the end of my first term, many of my friends were from Trinity and I couldn't wait to move in. In those five years I met people and did things that I would not have experienced otherwise. I became the first woman on the TCAC, the first female valedictee of the year and the first woman to stand in the Senior Student elections, in which I came a close second. Margot Foster (TC 1976)

After Sunday morning Chapel this unknown gentleman, with his dog, was a regular visitor who addressed anyone who would listen. Revd. John Falkingham, College Chaplain, faces the camera. Bill Mackie (TC 1940)

My memory is that it was after the inter college aths, and Giulia (Baggio) and I ran really well ... Definitely a happy memory, as we were calling ourselves “the gun runners” all night. We thought it was hilarious. Frank (Henagan) was the aths coach. Penny Smithers (TC 1985)
